When it comes to healthcare, Maine gets high marks for its quality of care. The trouble is, it’s getting harder for Mainers to access that care.

Our 2023 Annual Report highlights how Community Health Options is expanding access to healthcare services, whether by adding providers to our behavioral health network, introducing virtual primary care on all plans, offering a new wellness platform or finding ways to trim out-of-pocket costs. 

We get it. You have a nagging pain in your back that just won’t go away, so you go see your doctor, who sends you for an X-ray. Unfortunately, the X-ray doesn’t show a thing, so the next step might be a CT-scan or even an MRI, and you may even have to see a specialist depending on the test results.

If you’ve been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, you likely already know the risks that come with high blood sugar levels—heart or kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage or stroke. Low levels can pose problems, too, like blurred vision, nightmares, headaches, confusion or lightheadedness.

Mainers, of course, are famous for their grit and for having each other’s backs in tough times. And while that’s true, healing takes time and it’s OK to need help, whether following a violent event, a natural disaster, a personal loss, or something else. Most important, when life comes at you hard, remember to be patient with yourself and to stay connected with those around you.
